Chronicles of an Addict - Chapter I: How Mangakas Manage to Screw Up their Stories

Caution: possible spoilers for the mangas mentioned in labels.

"Did it ever happen to you that after reading the first chapter of a manga, you thought: "Ohhh, this manga is gonna be epic and as you read the manga, that feels slowly disappears? And when you reach last chapter, you feel like you've been cheated?"

Twinklelie followed Vampire Knight for almost 4 years. Every months she was waiting for the new chapter to be translated. Unlike other vampire stories *coughtwilightcough*, she seemed to find the story, though sometimes soppy, interesting. Of course, sometimes the story was less appealing, but she kept reading it as she felt that the end would be mind-blowing.

Last Saturday, the final chapter was finally released. With great expectations, she began to read it. When she finally finished it, the only thing that came to her mind was:
- " Seriously? What the hell did just happen? This was not supposed to happen! "

Her mind went blank for a while:
-" Sigh… Why did you do this? How could you?
I don't mind it when people die or whatever, but you have to do this correctly…

Aish! Whatever "

It seems that she wasn't the only one who felt cheated. Indeed, the translation Team's state was apparently the same as hers if not worse…

At that moment, she remembered one of her the biggest disappointments:

 - " This one deserves the Palme d'Or of screwed endings… After all she went through to revolutionize the world, she doesn't succeed and vanishes in the nature. Everyone has even forgot about her."

- "If only they were all like Fruits Basket and Fullmetal Alchemist…" she thought

And so after ranting about Vampire Knight and Utena, she got back to her regular activities…

Honorable mention to Death Note where they managed to ruin everything half-way through by killing 'L'
You will be remembered forever

  1. I tried to read Vampire Knight, but I could never get into it, and not because it was a vampire story. There was so much rave about it, and I just didn't see what was so great about it. After hearing about that ending though, I'm glad I didn't get into it

  2. I agree, the ending to VK was totally messed up and made the last 30 chapters of the series fairly pointless. However, ever since they announced last year that the series was ending this year, the mangaka seemed not very interested in doing VK anymore.

I was like you, I started reading the series and through about the first 50 chapters I thought VK would one day be classified as a classic. Then the next 20 chapters seemed to drop down to more of average with potential. Yuki seemed to turn into a weak character, but then started to find her way and thought the series would pick up again.

The last several chapters were sort of confusing, but I thought that everything would be resolved and explained in a good ending type of way. But in the end, I was sitting there saying to myself, "wtf, this type of ending was a contradiction and more of a tragedy."

So everyone dies, and Kaname who was the one who caused all the problems ends up being brought back to life in the worst possible circumstances. It seems more like a revenge or FU type of moment for everything he put her through instead of love.

Seriously, did Yuki think that Kaname would ever be happy under these kind of circumstances to be brought back when he was already tired of living for so long only to find out she had committed suicide to bring him back and its her kids that greeted him (they don't seem that happy about what happened and more likely resent him for what why she died).

Kaname probably would be hating himself even more knowing how he was brought back. The guy was already depressed before, it wouldn't be much of stretch to think under those kind of circumstances that he would either live miserably until he died of old age or would kill himself in despair therefore making her sacrifice somewhat meaningless.

  3. Let's not forget the other major messed up part of the last chapter, the cure to vampirism. Aido finds the journal that Kaname kept of his research and easily recognizes that Kaname had almost completed figuring out a cure that would turn vampires into humans.

So, after living for 10,000 years was Kaname just impatient to finish in a few more years, or was he just a jerk and wanted to get rid of all vampires by killing?

This ending really makes me dislike Kaname. Oh well, I've disliked Kaname's character due to his lack of honesty with others especially with Yuki throughout the series. You have to feel somewhat sorry for Zero after all he went through in this series as well.

With the way this series ended so horribly, I'll be very hesitant to try reading any other series by Hino Matsuri.

  4. Never followed VK but have heard of the bad ending, but I can relate to feeling dissapointed in a series I liked. In my case Hoshi was one of those,I really liked it untilI realized that Chihiro and Sakuya was going to happen. To me they had no chemistry, I felt like it was all one sided and then bam, Chihiro's feelings came out of left field. And i'm sure there are others but I can't remember right now.

  5. I don't think Yuki committed suicide. The cure Aido helped to make better could not work on Kaname because his heart was in the furnace, as long as it was there, the only way at that moment to turn him human was for Yuki to sacrifice herself. But she does not. She waits x years x centuries until the relationship between vampires and humans gets better, until the furnace to create anti-vampire weapons is not needed anymore to close it. And she does close the furnace, puts Kaname's heart back into his chest, uses the cure on him, and voilà he's back alive and human. She's not the one who greets him back though, their relationship is over.

I never really liked Kaname, treating Yuki like a baby, and I really ended up despising him toward the end. Zero is the one that made me read all the manga.
